Over the next few weeks each track is going to be previewed on the Cable tribute album page so I think it would be intreasting to see who's done the best cover of the the album?

Basice critiria are:- Orginality, keeping the songs theme, or most simular to the oringal. and its out of ten too.

it's up and it's pretty good. i give it a 7 - mainly cos it sounds like the original (no bad thing obviously).

I preferred Swound?s cover of Honolulu and would give that a 7, God Gave Me Gravity is a straight cover which is ok but I really don?t think the vocals suit the song at all so I only give it a 4

4 huh?

Nice screaming towards the end though. I'll stick with 7. Even if it means I have to give all the rest 10 when they get put up there.

Just a quick question by the way - and apologies if it's been answered elsewhere - but where exactly will one be able to purchase said record. 7 weeks away it may be, but i am preparing myself.

By the way, we started with this one to ease in gently, the album is a nice mix of stright up versions like this, and some more out there versions, you'll get a glimpse of one of those when the tellison track goes up next week....

To be honest after hearing that i think im looking forward to the more out there versions.
That just sounded like a local pub band covering it, it wasnt bad, i just think it would have sounded better if inflight had added some of their style to it, a bit like when a dance producer remixes a track for someone, they're going to make it sound different using some of the original so it is still identifiable but also adding new sounds and giving it a new angle. (good producers that is).  Just my opinion, im still oooking forward to the rest.

That?s my feeling exactly, if your going to cover a song you give it your own twist otherwise you might as well listen to the original. I?m sure not all the tracks on the album will be this dull and I?m looking forward to hearing how the other bands have interpreted the other songs.

The Honolulu cover had at least some of the bands spirit in it whereas God Gave Me Gravity was a rather dull straight cover ? and I still don?t like the vocals at all, funnily enough after hearing it again I think my mark of 4 was actually quite generous.

I have to say at this early stage it basically did what all tribute albums invariably do and left me grasping for the original. Perhaps that's the point though and I await with interest for the other tunes.

The Tom Vek offering is a big one for me so here's hoping....

i'm not gonna say too much, but i'll keep stressing the whole point when we started was to do a mixture of fairly regualr covers and more 'out there covers'. so it works as an album, i.e some are easily recognisable and keep the flow going, and other are more 'hhhmmm' moments.......and i wanted to start with a regular one, so the purists didnt whinge...... personally, there's nothing i hate more than a covers album that is so far removed from the originals that it just sounds weird, its like, i like cable for a reason.....how they sound.
you just wait till tellsion and get cape go up in the next few weeks.......then you''ll have a better idea of what the album is all about and how it will sit with each other. we sent outa  bunch of 5-6 track samplers earlier this month to press people, and the response we've had from them has been phenomenal, so yeah, hold steady, it will all work itself out and hopefully you will 'get' the idea when you hear the whole thing as 1...
album will be a normal price for an album. which means i havent worked it out yet!

A perfect example  of a cover is Cables version of Ring Of Fire.  It still sounded a lot like the original Johnny Cash version but Cable also made it their own song in a way by adding their trademark twingly gutairs and loud riffs. Perfect.

Dont get me wrong signature im still looking very much forward to the rest of the album, and i can see your point about keeping the flow with some straight up versions but i just prferfer when the band covering the song gives it their own trademark too.  That way i might feel compelled to want to check out some of there own work coz lets face it any band can do a staright up cover after a few practices.

I feel like im taking a dig here, i hope it doesnt come across like that coz what you're doing is a great thing, Im gonna buy it either way and im sure there will be stuff i very much like on it

Peace

Alistair.

hello everyone. i'm rob, the drummer from in flight program!

firstly i'd just like to say thanks to everyone for all the interest in the tribute album. when the idea was first announced there was a lot of cynicism in the derby music scene about certain bands' involvement (or non-involvement as the case may be) and i was really worried the kind of die hard folk that the majority of cable fans are would just write it off instantly. but your eagerness is excellent! and there are some sweet sweet tunes to come.

secondly i should explain a bit about why our cover is the way it is. when we were first asked to record a song (back in february), the deal was that we couldn't change the structure - it had to be pretty much as the original. so instead of doing something that sounded just a tad different to the original and run the risk of it sounding like a poorly played cover, we tried to make it as close to it as possible. after we recorded it, the not changing structure rule was loosened, but unfortunately we were too late! in hindsight, we would have loved to done it a bit differently, but as it stands we're still incredibly proud of it.

placidcasual (EDIT - sorry Alistair!), you mentioned that when you do a cover, you should sort of make it into the style of your own band - well to be honest, it is in the style of our own material. we are all huge Cable fans (my name is in the credits for Sub-Lingual, i did the "Sports Cars And Cable Worship" website back in the day) and are very much influenced by them. so really our version of the song, is the song in our style. it's just that our style takes a LOT of cues from Cable themselves!

we're really honoured to be able to be on a tribute for one of our all time favourite bands and all of your comments have been taken on board for the next cover we do... whatever that will be!

looking forward to seeing you all at the release show we've got planned.

xxx

(mr signature tune is going to kill me for writing this load of wussy shit.... )

Great to see you here signaturetune and cheers for the mp3 link while the myspace track was getting processed.

I liked that "In Flight Program" track, would happily have that blasting on the car stereo, so seven for me, not my favorite Cable track either.

The sneaky peek at Swound!'s "Honolulu" was real grower, first listen I wasn't too sure but come the 3rd play loved it. 9/10.

Cables heyday were my missing years so didn't get into them fist time round, Damon gave me my Cable intro a couple of years ago, so I guess I don't have any sentimental memories attached to any of the cable tracks nor the muso credentials to consider the purity of a cover. So I'll just vote as to how much I like a track, the album release will be seeing me reaching into my wallet.

Keep up the good work Signaturetune,  if you get any details of the online retailers or any promo stuff you want pushing, let me or Damon know and we'll whack it all over the front page of this site.

Hi Rob

Cool man, as i said i didnt think it was a bad cover as a straight up version,  and if you's guys have taken a lot of influence form Cable, and the fact you had to stick to the original structure  might explain the similarities to the original. I just personally prefer when somethings done differently, i listen to a lot of techno (i know! i know! prob not most folks taste on here) and when a techno track is remixed by another artist it usually sounds very different from the original which may explain my persoanal view on covers. But i suppose covers are exactly that and remixes aren't exactly covers so i guess my expectations were wrongly placed.  Im glad you made a contribution ot he album and as signature says i will probabaly grow to like it more when its listend to as part of the album.

I do remember your website, it was one of only a few around then to get that Cable fix. I got so close to completing a website myself but then they split up and it didnt seem so worth it after that.

Peace

Alistair

re: the first offering for the cable cover album

It's a real shame that IFP couldn't have done more with the cover - it really is awful.

I mean, well done to them for learning the parts an all - probably quite difficult for a band like cable and their strange chord shapes. But just because cable aren't around, it doesn't mean that covers should replicate the original down to the last note. Make it seem kind of pointless you know!

If that was the brief that the band were given, I think that shows a lack of vision, not to mention a lack of respect for the band. Surely they should be allowed the freedom to do what they want and experiment with the original, which seems to me to be the point of doing a cover.

I think this project is a absolutely great idea though - can't wait to hear the  next songs to be released. Well done to those who thought of it...

actulaly, legally, we have to be very careful with the covers. we are fortunate because we have the songwriters themselves oking everything, which opens a few legal doors, but there's still a lot to be careful of.......it's a legal minefield this covers lark, especially when the original band has a fat ass publisher/ (now) major label behind it
a good example of this would be the smiths covers album that came out a year or so back, which i'm assuming did not have the backing of the smiths. death cab for cutie were meant to be on that, because because they changed lyrics, their song coudnt be used.....
also, your johnny cash exmaple, cable sound nothing like johnny cash, therefore their cover of ring of fire was bound to sound different - whereas a lot of band who like cable, not co-incedentally, actually do sound like cable - so when they do covers that's what happens. i also think the swound one is pretty close to the original, and there's a few other on there that do too.......But unlike you, i think in context that is a very good thing.
But like i say, wait for the final thing, hopefully there'll be something on there for everyone.........and im pretty sure most of the fuss will be kicked up over the weird ones to be honest, as i reckon they are most likely to piss people off!

4 days till the next one....

Im actually looking forward to the weird ones, an album full of bands that sound like cable playing cable songs would be dull.  A lot of the  best covers are done by bands that dont necessarily sound like the original. Johnny Cash covering Hurt, he sounded nothing like nine inch nails and thats whats good about it, it brought the song in a new light. The lyrics shouldnt need to be changed, just the style in which it is played otherwise i really see no point in it.

Haha, I absolutely love Death Cab but they always change the lyrics when covering Smiths songs don't they! They completely fu*k the chorus lyrics for Charming Man on their demo album!!

I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion on the song. I really like it, but obviously some of you dont. I expect most of you would feel the same about our version of Honolulu. I think its always going to be hard to please the diehard fans who visit this forum.

I think the worry of doing a radical version of a great song is that most people will probably hate it. In the end, the originals are all ace. It's very hard to know how to approach a challenge like this.

Whatever, I''ve been lucky enough to hear a few of the tunes and they all sound ace. Like Marc said, it's a good mix. I'm confident that it'll please most people. I personally can't wait to hear the full version.

Ciao

Ahoy!

I'm probably being slow here, but where can I find Swound's cover of Honolulu?  I wanna have a listen - it sounds interesting.

As for the In Flight Program cover, I think they've done a real good job of covering the song.  Every single part is note perfect to the original.  It is a shame that IFP didn't have a stab at trying to put their own twist on the song but I understand the legal implications, etc.

Im actually looking forward to the weird ones, an album full of bands that sound like cable playing cable songs would be dull.

I totally agree with PlacidCasual, why would I bother listening to exact covers of Cable songs when I can just listen to the Cable songs themselves?

Credit to IFP though it was a very faithful reproduction of the original and I actually quite liked the vocals.  The singer did a good job as Cable songs are hard to sing (well, they are when you're as talentless a singer as I am!).

I will say this though, the Ultra Violet cover better be good or I'll be upset!  ;D

Thanks,

Our cover was made available for 0.1 seconds once. I think it's doing the rounds on the underground circuit with fans trading it left right and centre. No, I sent it to Damon cos I wanted his opinion and he makes me happy with the site. Others who have heard it probably have done so cos they are associated with the album in some way.

I don't really want anyone to hear it now as I'm scared of the panning it'll get. It's very close to the original, just a bit more energetic I guess with a few little quirks thrown in.

Believe it or not, Cable songs are very hard to sing. Matt could hit some amazingly high notes at times.

Even after all this time Cable were a band that people either love or hate, people are very passionate and excited about the tribute album and understandably so. To be really honest I was initially disappointed when I heard about the album as i really wasn?t sure about some of the bands featuring on it, after hearing God Gave Me Gravity I was left wondering what other Cable songs have been ruined ? and then I heard the Honolulu cover and I started to feel better.

The truth is you can?t please everyone and no one is attacking anyone or any band by saying they don?t like the cover, when you play in a band (as myself and many others do on these boards) you put yourself in a position to be criticised but all we are doing here is saying what we think of the song and NOT the band.

I don?t see anything wrong with liking or not liking the songs and being honest about it, I still think that a straight cover is pointless and I for one would sooner listen to the original but is that opinion shared by everyone ?? NO, so please remember that no one is bad mouthing any bands here.

This is at the end of the day a Cable forum and that is the reason we are all here

There does seem to be some kind of animosity in the Derby scene about this compilation -  it's come up a few times on here. Can anyone fill in the gaps...? Did some bands get pissed because they weren't asked and then started dissing the bands that were?

argh. dont start on that. please please please - there's nothing worse than local scene politics. let's keep this postive. of course there are people out there, some of which ive come across that have nothing to do but be negative about things like this - i guess that's inevitable when doing a covers album. But yeah, i know of people being weird about it, and to be honest i couldnt give a flying fuck...
as long as Cable arent against it (i've talked to all of them, they've been fully supportive the whole way), then thats all i care about....

Hello everyone,
There has been some intresting responcers to this topic. I'm from Derby and the politics in the scene are crackers and one of the reasons why I left Derby. All I have to say is that In flight Plan Rock. There vertion of God Gave Me Gravity spot on. IFP added there own thing by speeding up the song a little and in doing so added there energy to it. Which they have loads of in there music. A Dam fine Cover if you ask me. 10 out of 10 for getting the parts right. look forward to see you guys at first floor tomorrow!

looking forward to hear what up next, I know Lost Alone and Fix It Kid are good to do a great job, They'll blow your head of as well!

If you guys how shit the rest of In Flights songs are you'd appreciate just how good their covewr is.

Some of you're opinions are really negative, I know Rob personally, I used to be in a band with the guy, I know he would have made the best job possible with what he had to work with. They were told oringinally that they had to keep the same structure contractually, you should really direct your crtitcisms at Mr Signature Tune for not getting the plan straight legally before asking bands to do covers.

The IFP cover is fucking ACE and when I heard it in DubRek, the studio where it was recorded I was totally blown away. Hey, it might be the same, at least it is totally rocking though!! I've seen IFP program develope, I've been at many gig where I've nearly fallen asleep but now I think they are finally begginning to hit the spot. Don't shoot them down, you know what the constraints were when they recorded the song, so the next oerson to say it sounds a bit too much like the original is a fucking idiot!

As for Tellison, I think it sounds like they have murdered a fairly cherpy up beat song. Each to their own!

Keep up the good work...

Well done to Signature Tune for releasing the album too....

Ahoy!

Mmmm. I'm not so sure about the Tellison cover.  Like Martin said, its lost a lot of the up-beat-ness (is that a word?) and what was a pretty cheery song is now kinda depressing!  I can't get stupid myspace to play the whole song, though - it keeps crashing after about a minute so maybe when it gets going it's a bit cheerier?

Fair play to all the bands who've had a go at doing a cover, though.  Especially those brave enough to try and do something new with the song as you run the risk of upsetting a lot of Cable fans!

Well done to Signature Tune for releasing the album too....
Yep, I totally agree.

Wasnt what i was expecting I like the tellison cover, or at least its not bad, it is quite downbeat but the vocals are good and it grew on me more after a second listen. I give it 7/10.

Re Martin - to say some of our comments are negative and that we are idiots for not liking the  IFP cover is a bit rediculous dude. Id only be lying if i said i thought it was good, i think some people have taken it too much to heart and cant accept that not everone likes it.

Martin behaviour like that is NOT tolerated in this forum, if I have to I will ban you and remove your posts. No one has said anything about the band, only what they think of the cover song. Everyone (like myself) knows that when they are part of a band they put themselves up for criticism, I myself didn?t like the cover simply because it sounds too much like the original but that is my opinion and why this thread was started.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and no one is right or wrong but this forum is not about insulting everyone as you don?t like what they have to say.

Tellison cover is brilliant. Well done. Great song, and they've done a great version of it.

I like the tellison song and it's one of my favourite Cable songs. If I didn't know the original I would probably like it a lot more than I do. At least it's different! Swish!

A mark of a good song is when you can play it in a completely different way to the orginal and it still sound good. ;D

Hope every bodys well

I'm so fucking impressed by Tellison's version, they've given a completely new lease of life to the song and added a fragility that is immense!! I love that sort of Postal Service, Pinback vibe so this scores big big points. Can it get any better!?

This is what I meant by putting your own personality into the cover and doing it in your own style, I find it very reminiscent of the Tears For Fears cover Mad World used for the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

This is quite simply an awesome cover of an awesome song (and one of my favourite Cable songs) this is what I hoped for when I first heard about the tribute album. I really there is more of this to come 10 out of 10.

Is anyone going to the London release party of the album by the way as I?m going to be there representing SubLingual.co.uk and I?m curious if any of our forum members will be present?

It is indeed a good cover, like a lot of good tunes it took me a couple of listens to grow on me. It's quite infectious.
Its shows strong a song it is when its stripped down like that and still sounds catchy. Its the clearest ive ever heard the lyrics to a cable tune before too.

Liking the Tellison cover quite bit after giving it few plays. Like the way it's been broken down in a minimalist kind of way, just using the basics and still coming out with the goods.
Will have to check out some of their own stuff. Anyone know here I can hear/find any of it?

Cheers

Also, noticed in this weeks Kerrang that Simon Young mentioned the album in the Decks Of Doom section. Nice little bit of publicity ;)

go to their myspace

www.myspace.com/tellison

one of my favorite bands in the UK right now for sure. usually they are a bit more rock-y but hopefully there'll be some more of this kind of stuff on the album they've just done!

It has the official seal of approval!

Roll on the Loastalone cover, I'm looking forward to that...

Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. Between 6 and 8 out of 10. Not sure yet.

I get the feeling that it's a grower. At first I didn't even realise it was a Cable song and that Damon had put the wrong track up. I've listened to it a few times and it's getting there. Slowly.

Damon - I did notice about a London launch party, and I would love to have come, but it's the only long weekend i've got planned outside of London for pretty much the whole of this year. Sorry dude. Come to Cardiff instead.

It?s nice to be back home, myself and Mrs SubLingual took a break for the weekend and left our home here at SubLingual towers and headed out to the country. We enjoyed home made cider and ate many an apple but the best part of going away is always returning to this World Wide Web we call home.

Funnily enough I thought the same thing as Benj, I didn?t really like the Freeze The Atlantic cover at first but it?s one of those that I?m pretty sure will grow  and grow on me. Not sure about marks out of 10 and right now in all honesty they wouldn?t be that high but again I do think the song will continue to grow on me.

And as for Cardiff well I?ve only ever been there once but I?m sure I shall return at some point.

Hmmmmm, i cant really decide either.  I think the vocals are very good but im not sure i like the guitar strums.  I cant rate it because i cant actually decide if i like it or not. The tellison one is still my fave, i had it stuck in my head for days.
At least the last 2 havent been as bad as the god gave me gravity cover.

been listening to get cape. wear cape. fly's freeze the atlantic. At first it kindof reminded me of incubus, its not bad at all, but it's not really blown me away or anything.

I'm not at all worried by my lukewarm response though. Ii can't wait for this album, freeze the atlantic is a song i'd kindof fell out with purely because i'd listened it to death. Its nice to have new life breathed into songs and a different take on them. The added bounus is that once i've listened to the tribute to album to death it'll highten my appreciation for the originals.  :)

Marc is correct about having to clear things legally if any of the artists were to alter structure or lyrical content for the purpose of the cover. We had to give the OK and it came a while after the tracks had started to be recorded.
I love the Swound Honolulu coz it has so much energy, I love tellison and get cape and I really like the international league's version of do the tube - i actually think that's an improvement - we f'd up the recording of that song in my opinion. Shame no one did Dinky - if Hudson Super 6 had been offered a slot, we'd have done that.
It's difficult - play it straight and it might sound boring, but swing too far away and it might just alienate the fans. I remember when Marc sent us the tellison track he said something like 'this will cause the fans to kick off'.

I get the same sort of grief over Hudson Super Six - the audience is nearly always for the most part cable fans.
They are 70% shocked and disappointed that we do not sound like cable. I've even heard people say stuff like 'well it's obvious who was the talent in that band etc'. Some say it's too 'poppy' others say it's too 'rock' rather than 'indie'.

First of all, I had spent the best part of 7 years creating a certain type of music and i wanted to try something different. I wanted to get back to the essence of what inspired me along the rock journey (!!!) how i'd ended up at fugazi, sonic youth and my bloody velentine, when as a 7 year old, sneaking into his older brothers bedroom in the 70s, I had listened to the Zep, Sabs, early ZZ Top, Free - the big 70s rock sound - big blues riffs stripped bare.
I guess my point is I've had as many doors closed to me because it turned out it wasn't exactly like cable as I've had doors opened because 'it's a bloke out of cable'.

Matt is doing the same with Je Suis Animal. Same goes for Rich. Again - nothing like cable. If I'd just formed another noisy guitar band that utelised dissonant chord structures and odd time signatures I would have been called black and blue for that and it would almost certainly been a pale imitation of the real deal - i firmly believe cable was a sum of it's parts and the great thing was, above and beyond the instruments we played ourselves, we could all speak openly and contribute about any aspect of the song. Rich's suggestions as how the riff should go was equally as welcomed as my suggestion for how the drums could sound with my bass part etc.

So with this record, just like with all of the above rambling examples, is about balance. Some are straighter than others some are more offbeat than others, but as a creative whole, i think the record works so well - the sum of the parts is the key here.

Trust me, the bigger picture is worth the wait.

There's something for everyone - some push the boat out just right for me, some push it too far and some not enough, but it's all subjective. Some of the straighter ones just light the spark for me, even tho i like things to be different. Hard to pin down why, they have a certain energy or they seem to feel what cable was about - just as a couple of the straighter ones seem to me to be lacklustre and somehow missing the point. Fix it Kid's oubliette did nothing for me whatsoever and the straightening out of it's rhythmic kinks seemed to bland it out even more so. Like it was done coz they were asked, not coz they love the band, but folk here have already said they love it.
There's hopefully something there for everyone into cable and Marc has done a genius job on putting it together.

I'm fortunate enough to have heard the whole thing for reviewing purposes now and while, in my opinion, it is very hit-and-miss, the hits are well worth it. Tellison's version is far and away the stand out track but Do The Tube is fantastic also. It sounds very much like a YCNI:M tune now which, for any fans of that band, is an awesome thing to hear!

Really though, for me, the reason to love this record lies purely in the props it pays to Cable.

I'm extremely interested to know in what way you feel the WAA version of Do The Tube lets you down tho Pete??

hey chris.....who do you write for?
i just got the full CDS back today, and from my opinion i'm totally happy with every single track on there, but that is my opinion (and i like very single band on there anyway, which might have something to do with it!) , and its cool that everyone else has one too - and i agree its more a case of us just going 'look how brillinat cable were' more than anything, as i think they've been pretty much overlooked which si ridiculous considering teh amount of influence they have had over UK bands in the last 10 years.....
anyhows. i hope everyone enjoys the CD, or at least likes a few tracks, if thats the case then it's been worth it. if not, just go back and listen to the Cable albums - because that's really the whole point of it. hence the word ''tribute'

Did this one for Rock Sound. It was a 200 worder which should, fingers crossed, mean a lead review.

Basically elaborated a bit further on what i said in my last post, and what you just said, about how the record is more about paying tribute to Cable than the actual versions themselves. That's been my point of view since I first heard about the record anyway so just built on that.

I was complimentary anyway and managed to get sublingual.co.uk in there for the band link too!

Everyone's a winner! :D

I am really hoping that the CD will make people revisit their Cable albums and introduce the band to new people, I have been fortunate enough to hear a few of the tracks that haven?t appeared on Myspace yet and like Chris I find the album really hit and miss but am I going to buy it ?? FUCK YEAH!

When I started this site I did so because I loved Cable and couldn?t understand why there were no sites out there dedicated to the band, the making of the tribute CD coincided with this site being made and since SubLingual.co.uk went live I?ve been amazed at the fan base still out there for the band.

I doubt Cable will ever reform but I do hope that the tribute album brings them some of the respect they so rightly deserve.

Right on dudes, of course il be buying it too.  Cable deserve so much respect for the music they made, i could never understand why they were never bigger, its simple, they were one of the best bands of their time, i dare anyone to listen to them and not have a thirst for more.  And i reckon this album will bring a few more fans,  and it gives the old fans something to relish.  When i listen to them now, it reminds me of how much i miss them still being around.

I used 'MP3 Direct Cut' to record it as it was playing on Myspace, and also to edit out the gaps where Myspace decided to stop and start up again a few minutes later.
