Title: How did you discover Cable?
Post by: Damon on September 28, 2006, 01:25:40 pm
How did you stumble upon their music and which was the first song that you listened to?

Caught the end of Hydra drifting into my ears at one of the Reading festivals just before Down Lift came out.  I ran to the tent loved it, but didn't know who they were. Looked in the line-up saw they were cable. When I got home I went to the local Punk/Indie Rock specialist and they sold me the first two singles on vinyl. Due to idleness  and them cancelling a gig next time I saw them was their last one.  :'(

I discovered them becasue they supported Feeder and were much better than Feeder too. I was hooked instantly. I had a kerrang cd which had souvenir on it and a melody maker one with ultra viloet,  these were the first 2 songs i heard (apart from freeze the atlantic being on the sprite ad). They were such good songs so after listening to them repeatedly i rushed to buy WAA on its release date. 9 years on im still listening to it regularly, partly refuelled by this site and the new covers album thats due.

I was in my first year of senior school and a niceolder  indie chic called ruth leant me a copy of Down Lift.. It was all over from that point!! spent the next 5 years drumming like Richie Mills and Neil Cooper!

Unforunatly at 12 years old I couldn't go to any gigs! I missed them play at the Big City Bash in Derby becuase I had to go to my grandparents golden wedding anniversary! Bastard!

I saw them at Union 1 in Derby, I actually went with Greg on this forum...

I travelled to London to see them at the Camden Barfly when they wore loads of tweed, it was amazing!

The last time I saw them was at the Vic in Derby, it was the last time they played Derby, it was really bad, I went to speak to Matt after the gig and he looked really deflated, sat on the floor drinking a bottle of whine!

A few weeks later they had split up...

I couldn't go to the last gig becuase it was a week night and I was still in year 10 at school, making me 15!

Looking back I should so have bunked off!

I hated the Vic gig. It sounds wank now, but I felt Derby let us down - it wasn't even full, was it? I mean it was busy, but it was the smallest gig on that tour. I don't think any of you knew that it was over at that point, but that night I was pretty disgusted with the turnout and the stiffness of the gig. It was probably unfair, but it seemed like our home town had let us down.

Hi Pete, Martin and everyone,
Pete that Derby Gig was killer. Brothers and Sister rocked like crazy Whisper Firing line unstopable. Everyone was playing with fire. Thats Derby people you, if your good they put you down or ostracized you. Me Steve B and Mark G were standing at the side of the stage in ore of you guys that night. It was also the last time you played in Derby fond memorys Thanks.

Martin I remember that gig I think that was the one when that monitor fell on Richies arm at the end of God Grave Me Graviry. Was a good gig You were in ore as was I. I'm glad you got to see them.

I can not remember the first time I heard Cable, infact i can't remember life before them, how odd. :)

Ace band

Greg.

Weirdly I was sent a video from that Vic show, sadly the quality of the recording was arse so it couldn?t be added to the site but both UKJohnD and I are working on screen grabs we took from the show so they should be added to some part of the site soon.

My favourite part of the footage was when during Bluebirds Are Blue Matt jumped into the audience and started crowd surfing and removed massive pieces of the ceiling with his brothel creepers in the process.

It was kinda similar to when i saw them at the la belle angelle (now burnt down shortly after the gig) in Edinburgh I had to ask my sister to come with me so i could get in! There was hardly anyone there which was a real shame. I dont remember seeing any promorion on behalf of the club to advertise the gig so that didnt help.
Was a good gig though, at least someone there was giving they're support, he was jumping and twirling all over the joint  :)

I feel angry to this day that I never got to see Cable play live. I lived in the Isle of Man until I came to nottingham for Uni.. It was a bit late though as they had just split up.

Shite.

Pictures fine, it's just the sound is obviously poor quality with it being done off a camcorder. It's the thought that counts!!  :'(

You could defo tell something was not right with the band that night though. Sad.

How did I discover Cable?

The man we all know and love of course.. Mr John Peel god bless his soul..

I was sat in my room one night listening to his show and he played 3 tracks which I then just HAD to get.. one by Brassy called "Straighten Out", "Malcolm's X-Ray Picnic" by Number One Cup and a Cable track.. I went on a record buying mission and yarrr, the rest be history..

I originally heard them on the infamous Sprite ad, then got into more of their stuff by listening to John Peel.

I first heard them when I was still at school, my mum had bought some Golden Grahams which had cds free with them. One of the cds had honolulu on it and the other had pocket promise along with some other bands who were wank. The addiction started there and before long I'd infected most of Peterborough's teenage music scene.

I'd heard some of Cable's tracks floating around, but heard them again on a Kerrang free CD. The same time I was buying that issue of the mag, I met my old friend from school Ollie. We got chatting about Cable and he informed me that his sister was 'going out with' Matt. I got into them massively and we went to the majority of Cable's Derby gigs - the highlight being the secret Christmas gig at the loft, which is one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

The first track that really caught my attention was probably 'Blue Birds are blue'

It was class! I lost most of my body weight in sweat and it was the first time I ever saw Twinkie play live as well, which made the night even better.
I seem to remember the last song being 'Freeze the Atlantic' and there being some white foam.
The goodie bags at the door were ace two - I still have the posters on my wall.

Another Derby fella here, saw them first supporting Salad (Jesus - I was 15 and didn't know any better) at the Wherehouse and they were so loud peoples' ears were bleeding. That was all I needed, saw all their Derby gigs from that point, as well as travelling to gigs elsewhere whenever possible, and bought everything they released. My name was in the credits for DLTUT and WAA (after I wrote some embarrasingly enthusiastic reviews for fanzines and the local paper) which still makes me so proud to this day, even if it was undeserved as I was just a fawning fan really.

I have three favourite bands - Pixies, Fugazi and Cable. All other bands are dogshite.

Marina Van Der Vlugt... I wonder where she is these days. She goes into that precious shortlist of 'female indie pop stars who hated cable'
She's at number 3, followed closely by Sonja Aurora Madan of Echobelly, but firmly in the number one spot is that bird out of Sneaker Pimps. They were unknown, below us on the bill and they had a power cut which ended the set prematurely. Bored cable fans talked loudly and threw stuff... then we came on, the crowd went bonkers and she cried backstage!

I heard them when DLTU was released. I think DJs from Radio 1 played a track in each program. Does anyone else remember that? LeMacq(?), Jo Whilley and Peely, wasn't it? Actually, I probably heard the Peel sessions before then.

Managed to see them at Dublin Castle Camden in 1997 promoting Animals. Awesome! My ears were ringing for 2 days after that.

I first heard & saw cable when they supported AC Acoustics and Archers of Loaf at the Garage, i think I was 17- 18 so must have been around 1994 - 1995...

That night I invented the Carlsberg and Vodka cocktail... danced mentally to Cable, (and Archers of Loaf).

That night I Bought a long sleaved Cable T ,in what I always thought was a really gay light blue, and would only again where in bed or to one other cable gig. I also bought the 7" single with obliette and hydra that night even though i didn't own a record player ( i even bought a second hand record player which broke instantly to try and play it). finally got my dad to make a tape recording which then got played at every house party i went to for the next 2 or three years.

Looking back I think i went a bit fanboy about cable. Probably still am. Good to be able to share a story with other people who have the same opinion.

"Archers of Loaf" - my God, it's a few years since I thought about them.. I liked them at the time but can't remember any of their songs.

Had a friend batter my ears with them and at that point i prefered to discover bands for myself so i kinda shelved Cable for another few years until i chanced upon the Sublingual promo in a charity shop for 50p...recognised it, bought it and rinsed it.  Have been building up my whole collection ever since and have converted many other friends as i was!
Animals attack and Sublingual are probably the only two albums i have that i can always listen too without a) finding a boring track, b) singing along, c) being absolutely uplifted after, d) wanting to listen to it again
