Seven years on from their untimely split it?s high time to pay tribute to Cable. In salute to one of the most influential British bands of the mid-to-late 90s, a host of today?s cutting edge acts have been lined up to show their love and put their mark on a selection of classic Cable cuts. The wide range of musical genres employed, from rock to folk and electronica to jazz, is proof positive of the way in which this band helped to shape a whole generation of musicians. And while, like most tribute albums, the results are largely hit and miss (Tellison?s fragile glitch-pop reinvention of Song 1 the most impressive), to over analyse these versions would be to miss the point. Simply by involving the likes of Tom Vek, Fixit Kid, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and members of yourcodenameis:milo and Bloc Party is to help keep Cable?s legacy alive and relevant: an important factor, given the ever-increasing momentum behind a potential reunion. All of the artists on this record, and the record label behind it, are fully-fledged Cable devotees; do yourself a favour, follow their lead and seek out this truly exceptional band. You won?t be disappointed. 7/10.
