Title: Cable lyrics
Post by: Corporate_Automaton on August 11, 2006, 03:52:49 pm
Alright, dudes!

How cool is this?!  A proper Cable forum!  Sweet!

Anyways, does anybody know a good source for Cable lyrics on the web?  Or do people wanna start posting up lyrics in this thread?

I've had a good look round the old interweb for lyrics but to no avail!  I've been into Cable for a few years now but can still only understand half of the lyrics!

Well, if anybody has any links or wants to post up some lyrics that'd be cool!

Thanks,

Corporate_Automaton

Sadly right now this is the only source for Cable on the web but I think the idea of people posting the bands lyrics here is great, I thought I?d get the ball rolling myself

Freeze The Atlantic

Watch the light diffuse and turn your back on home, you reflect on how you did it on your own. So ride the evening smog and crack the ceilings off and hide your smile behind fifty fingers.

Now you look for compromise and everyone?s hypnotised, the spectators are ball games you devise, well there?s nothing left but glass and stone. When its achieved, buy me a new catch phrase.

Its time to change the number on your telephone and ask the questions of you?re told to die alone, so ride the evening smog and crack the ceilings off. Hide your smile behind fifty fingers.

Now you look for compromise and everyone?s hypnotised, the spectators are ball games you devise, well there?s nothing left but glass and stone. When it?s achieved, buy me a new catch phrase.

Cheers, dude!

So now I can finally sing along with Freeze the Atlantic and not have to mumble the words I don't know!

O.K.  I'll have a stab at Bluebirds are Blue but there's plenty of gaps that someone will have to fill!

Bluebirds are Blue

Caught in another person's hands, making other people's plans, your plans are walk away, as fast as you can say, I've got a little news for you, you can read if you want to [not sure about that line], the reason in my mind, I'm sure I'll never find,

Day after day, I'm chasing the better times, behind you now, [I have no idea what he sings here!]

Where have the groovy people gone, now that groovy came along, am I the only one, [no idea what this line is], we're only half way through, bluebirds are blue, you should try it too, 'cause it's really nothing new,

Day after day, I'm chasing the better times, behind you now, [no idea!]

Caught in another person's hands, making other people's plans, your plans are walk away, as fast as you can say, I've got a little news for you, you can read if you want to, the reason in my mind, I'm sure I'll never find,

Day after day, I'm chasing the better times, behind you now, [no idea!]

[extended dischordant jam with sampled talking - incidentally, does anybody know where the sample is taken from?  It sounds like someone talking about gameshows?]

Day after day, I'm chasing the better times, behind you now, [no idea!] x 2

Well, that probably doesn't tell anybody anything new, but if someone cares to fill in my gaps that would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hi Guys,
Nice one working out the lyrics, I think I might be able to help you. hope this helps!

All the missing bit you could'nt workout I've put in Capitals

Cought in another persons hands, making other people's plans your plans are a wosh away, as fast as you can say I've got little news for you, YOU CAN READ IT BE ONE TOO

Day after day, I'm chasing the better times behind you now, NOW THAT YOUR WORRIED

Where have all the groovy people gone, now that groovy came along am I the only one, THIS PLACE IS BETTER THAN PUN, we're only half way through blue birds are blue you should try it too, 'cause it's really nothing new

The rest of the song is as you've worked out

As for the sample you can hear through the middle eight. Its several TV programs sampled and put together as one. By doing this you don't have to play for any copyrights on the sample (clever huh!)

look forward to do the next one ;)

I again can help out here with the few lines and words that are missing.

Bluebirds Are Blue

Caught in another person?s hands making other peoples plans. Your plans will wash away as fast as you can say, got a little news for you, you can read if you want to. The reason in my mind that you?ll never find.

Day after day I?m chasing the better times behind you, now I?ll bet you?re worried.

Where have the groovy people gone now that groovy came along? Am I the only one who placed a bet upon, we?re only half way through, bluebirds are blue. You should try it too, it?s really nothing new.

Day after day I?m chasing the better times behind you, now I?ll bet you?re worried.

Chaps. You may be surprized to learn that not even the rest of Cable were privvy to the genius of Bagguley's twisted mind, so we never even learned the words to our own songs... However, we did publish a lyric sheet for WAA that you could get by writing to the PO Box...I later found from matt that he'd bullshitted a fair amount of them...but he did have to submit lyrics to our publishers Chrysalis... often words were written in the studio when we only had one verse or perhaps the chorus to the song but not the verses. So then I would stuff scribbled on paper. I know that for the filming of 'When Animals Attack' Matt had to hand over most of his lyrics to Mark Adcock the director of the film, so that he could write a script around them.
Damon pretty much has the words to blude birds nailed. I understand them to be:

Caught in another person's hands
making other people's plans
plans that wash away
as fast as you can say
got a little news for you
you can read if you want to
the reason in my mind
i'm sure i'll never find

day after day i'm
chasing the better times
behind you now
i'll bet you're worried

where have the groovy people gone?
now that groovy came along?
am i the only one
who placed a bet upon
we're only half way through
blue birds are blue
and you should try it too
it's really nothing new.

As far as I know, Freeze the atlantic goes:

You watch the light diffuse
and turn your back on home
and you reflect on how
you did it on your own
drift on the evening smog
it's cracked, the ceiling's old
you hide a smile behind
fifty fingers
now you're looking for compromise
and everyone's hynotized
model spectators of
ball games you devised
and there's nothing left
but glass and stones
spare me some change
and buy me a new catch phrase

it's time to change your number
on your telephone
and ask the questions that
you're told should die alone
drift on the evening smog
it's cracked, the ceilings old
you hide your smile behind
fifty fingers

I'll try and help out with more if you have any specific requests and also the story behind the song itself, which matt usually only divulged after a number of vodkas, but yeh, every cable lyric was telling a story... but i only know some of them!

Ahoy!

Now that really is cool - lyrics straight from the horse's mouth (if you see what I mean)!

Pete, if you're doing requests  - can I ask for the lyrics to Land Speed Record (sorry for being cheeky!)?

As for stories behind the lyrics, can I ask what the lyrics to Ultra Violet mean (if anything!)?  I'm sure there's some real deep philosophical meaning behind the song, but I can't for the life of me work it out what it could be!

Hi Pete,
You've got the Best bass sound ever!!.

I wondered if you know the lyrics and the story behind 'Signature Tune' 'Whisper Firing Line' and 'God Gave Me Gravity'. I have done my brian in for years trying to workout what the lyrics and songs were about. Any help would be great.

Thankyou.

Greg.
Title: Re: Cable lyrics
Post by: Pete Cable on August 14, 2006, 12:49:04 am
OK...I found the lyric sheet I did for When Animals Attack.
So... the 3 songs Greg asked for go like this:

SIGNATURE TUNE
Changed your mind
Your money?s on the line
Changed your mind
You?re working over time
You?re lying to me
Safer than a diamond?s eye
Play a part for you and I
Want to stay anonymous
And share yourself with all of us
Rented out your privacy
And questioned your ability
Riding on a parallel
And all the world?s an open shell
Made to measure alibi
Time for you to say goodbye

The song has probably one of the most interesting stories behind it - there was a front page news story on the Derby Evening Telegraph about a woman who worked in the DHSS during the day but had a 2nd evening job as a stripper - anyway, the local council found out and got her sacked, saying her second job was 'innapropriate' for someone in a public facing position - she claimed she had to have a second job to make ends meet and stripping did more than just pay the bills - anyway, she took the local govt. to court for unfair dismissal and won.
Hence 'changed your mind, your working over time' and 'Want to stay anonymous And share yourself with all of us Rented out your privacy And questioned your ability'.

Whisper Firing Line:

Patience wearing thin
Starves our oxygen
The further that I see
Hills begin to bleed
Hold your breath for me
If I had your way
Barking at my door
Can?t be heard at all.
Whisper firing line
Poison on your  plate
Eat the words you hate
She can feel the world?s
Eyes on everyone
Words will not out run
A beggar and his gun
Drink the sea to see
The rust beneath the waves
Whisper firing line

Whisper firing line is about how rumours spread in the 'chinese whispers' style eventually causing more damage than the original story when it finally gets back to the people who really shouldn't hear it!

God Gave Me Gravity:

I?m an amateur in black
Here to buy my clothing back
Guilt slips from my fingertips
Royal endorsement
Gold elipse
A former name
Has lost the game
Old enemies have taken aim
Flies from a blank sign post
Turn to find a different host
Focus on a different sight
Doesn?t mean you?ll get it right
Nicotine mouth wash smile
Hides his head
Beneath the night
The litter on the streets
Shares the lazy time you keep
Victim number one
Hides his head beneath the sun
There?s a name for every way to change your mind
I guarantee you won?t be left behind
(You?re force fed, taken in)

As far as I can remember, this, and to some extent Souvenir, is about Matt and his then girlfriend Louise trying to run a 2nd hand clothes business - you know, retro chic and all that. What neither of them had antcipated at the time was just how cut throat the competition was and what tactics they used to drive them out of business. And they did - within about 6 months Hepcat clothing went out of business

Would have to listen to Land Speed Record to jog my memory, as only WAA is on the lyric sheet. Will see what I can come up with...

HI Pete,
Thanks so much for taking the time to 'Fill in the gaps' with those songs. My mind can rest easy now. I was pretty close with what Signature Tune was about but still really instesting to hear real story.

I alway thourght that The Line in the second verse of Whisper Firing Line was 'Eat the words you made' and not 'Eat the words you hate'  tunes out it was the other way round, Still they both sound cool.

God Gave me Gravity (What a song). I remember looking in Hepcat when I was growing up in Derby a very classie shop. I never knew that Matt was one of the owners!

Loved the Bass part in 'From here you can see yourself' and its in Five. You and Richie were on fire on that one!

Have a great day Pete and thanks

Greg.

Ahoy, Greg!

You managed to work out what Signature Tune was about?  Impressive!  I haven't got any idea what any of Cable's songs are about - apart from maybe Seventy (about being old?) and Hexagon Eyes (a song about being a fly - now that's inspired!).

The bass part in From Here... is cool I agree - the last twenty seconds of the song always make me think of Primus, though I'm guessing Primus aren't a huge influence on Cable!  Are you saying From Here... is in 7/4?  Cause it sounds to me like 5/4?

Cheers,

Alright,
NO ..noo..Its in Five. I agree with you. I Wrote that post quite late last night. I think I was thinking of that song but had a differnent one going in my head. I should go to sleep earlyer, This Forum is really addictive!

Ahoy!

No worries!  I agree with the sleep thing - I could do with a couple of days' sleep!

I'll be totally honest though I hadn't noticed that Cable were so into odd time signatures until you mentioned it!  The only odd time signatured song I'd noticed before was Arthur Walker (6/4, I think) but having listened to some Cable last night/this morning, I've noticed that loads of the songs have odd time signatures - sometimes changing time halfway through the song!

I guess the odd time signatures highlight just how good the rhythm section were - to stay tight when you're changing time throughtout the song takes some skill!

Cheers,

Ahoy!

That's a great idea, Damon! To get this thread back on track then, I'll have an attempt at the lyrics to Land Speed Record myself and people can fill in the gaps.  Thanks by the way to everyone who filled in the gaps in my attempt at Bluebirds are Blue - much appreciated!

Land Speed Record

Do the rumba do the clap[?]
When you pause the second hand
Indisposable I am
To the festival I ran
Now I'm trying to escape
From the yellow boundary tape
Wearing tyre marks on my shirt
[No idea]
I am just a mess
A vagabond's address
Tailor Made [something...]
Measure your success
Blood on the dashboard
Action Manicure
For the holder of
The land Speed Record

The world comes watching me[?] (Refrain 2nd time around: I watch the moon shake)
Watching the moon shake
Broken every rule
To cover one mistake

Lie like a prisoner
When the cinema
Falls silently to sleep
I can see us as we spin
'Round the hairpins of Monaco

Lie like a prisoner
When the cinema
Falls silently...
Smile through the ornamental pain
That you wear

Actually, there weren't too many gaps there (and hopefully not too many mistakes)!  Corrections and additions gratefully received!

Cheers,

Corporate_Automaton

P.S. Greg, I've only just noticed that this is another 6/4 (but the middle 8 is 4/4)!
Title: Re: Cable lyrics
Post by: Greg on August 15, 2006, 11:13:04 am
Alright Corporate,
6/4 is a great time signature as you can make it feel really eaven like 4/4. Which is how Cable use it also dosen't change the over all flow like some other time signatures do. Whisper firing Lines in 6/4 to and sounds like its in 4 (there loads of Cable songs that do this see if you can spot them). That's great songwriting and musicianships skill for you.

I'll see if I can help with 'Land speed Record' but it looks like you've a great job as it is!

I think The line in the first verse is 'A PERMIT PRESSED CERTIFICAT'

 Tailor made 'YA-LEISURE'

Then the line in the choures is 'THE WORLD COMES WHATCHING YOU MAKE'

I think thats it. ::)

Greg.

The Colder Climate

Tear down your home
when the air you breathe has gone
Turn from the sky
I?ll buy your land
But I haven?t got the money

On shallow ground
you?re a disciple to the sand
will the public get what they deserve

Turn from the sky
He sold his heart
for a second hand opinion

Will the public get what they deserve?
Will the public get what they deserve?

Dinky

There?s a landslide coming down the mountain
Tsunami choking on the sea
Blind spot over 3-60 degrees
Ricochet driver times speed

There?s a landslide coming down the mountain
Tsunami choking on the sea
Blind spot over 3-60 degrees
And a target over me

Don?t ask me how but your killing me now

Headlights over in the mirror
Lies flash by our eyes
lying with my mouth wide open
trying not to act surprised

Headlights over in the mirror
Lights flash by our eyes
driving with my mouth wide open
trying not to breathe while our ribs are broken

Don?t ask me how but your killing me now
Killing me now.

From Here You Can See Yourself

Heads you want a remedy
Tails you want a remedy

No, I?ve never met the queen
she?s never anywhere I?ve been
She walks veiled in solar beams
Heads you want a remedy
Tails you want a remedy

Heads you want a remedy
Tails you want a remedy

Now, feeling happier
and so much nicer to everyone
now feeling happier
Heads you want a remedy
Tails you want a remedy

Heads you want a remedy
Tails you want a remedy

Ahoy!

Damon's been busy! Thanks, man!  Do you never sleep?!

Greg, I see what you mean about 6/4 feeling like 4/4.  I think that's why I've never noticed that so many of Cable's songs are in 6/4 because it just feels so much like 4/4.  It's only when you make a conscious effort to count along that you notice that it isn't 4/4!  Also, thanks for your additions to my attempt at Land Speed Record, much obliged!

Right, because I'm enjoying this so much, I thought I'd have a stab at another song!  This time, it's Song 1.  As usual, if people can fill in my gaps and correct any mistakes then that would be great!

Song 1

On the Verandah looking out to sea
We're weary as KP [that can't be right!]
And I know you're ready
To be dead and buried

Give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains maybe
Fingers crossed, here's my penny [?]

On the Verandah looking out to sea
In weakness you may be find in me
And I know you're ready
For any old somebody

Give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains maybe
Fingers crossed, here's my penny

On the Verandah looking out to sea
We chew off the rears of longevity [?]
Until our balls lay empty
One morning, the light's on me [?]

On the Verandah looking out to sea
I dream that you're with me
'Cos you're my only friend
[something?] Land's End

Give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains maybe
Fingers crossed, here's my penny

You're the captain of the cleaner [?]
On your yacht in the marina
And the lines you rowed between
Are the chalk marks at your murder scene

Thanks,

Alright there Corporat,
I think you've got this one licked!

'we're weary as KP' is right as well as the last verse

'We chew off there rears of longevity' that right

Apart from the last ine in the second verse thats it!

Ahoy, Greg!

Cheers for checking the lyrics over, dude.

Just one question: do you have any idea what being 'as weary as KP' means?  What is 'KP'?  A person?  An animal?  KP peanuts?!  Hmmm...  A conundrum!

Thought I?d try and fill in the gaps, this is how I?ve always heard the song

Song One

On the veranda looking out to sea,
Weary escapee,
And I know you?re ready to be dead and buried.

You give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains maybe
Fingers crossed, here?s my penny

On The veranda looking out to sea,
The weakness you may find in me
I know you?re ready
For any old somebody

You give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains maybe
Fingers crossed, here?s my penny

On the veranda looking out to sea
And you are the reason for longevity
Until our balls lay empty
One morning, the light is on me

On the veranda looking out to sea
And I dream that you?re with me
As you?re my only friend
With no mans, lands end

You give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains may be
Fingers crossed, here?s my penny

You?re the captain, I?m the cleaner
On your yacht in the marina
And the lies you wrote between
Are the chalk marks at your murder scene

Hello

Bit like Blankety Blank round here!

Am currently listening to WAA and finally, after much guess work and misinterpretation(!) over the last 9 years, I'm able to figure out what Matt was blathering on about. Now I know what Richie was shouting during God Gave Me Gravity (always tried to lip read what he was singing at gigs but could never work it out).

I'll give Honolulu a try and let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Ahoy!

I think I agree with Damon here, Greg.  It seems likely that the line is "a weary escapee" and not "weary as KP" because escapee actually makes sense!  I guess we'll have to wait for Pete Cable to come and confirm it either way!

LOL at Blankety Blank!  I agree!  It is a hell of a lot of fun working the lyrics out though.  That's why I'm gonna have a go at:

The (We Did the Music for the Sprite Ad) blues

Sit around all day
In an alcoholic daze
Counting all my money
The profits I have made
Money makes me dizzy'
'Cause it turns the world too fast
Flush it down the toilet
It's blocking up the u-bend
My secret must be kept
'Cause I'll be robbed if they find out
There must be 90 thousand pounds
In my aquatic bank account
I've tried and tried again
To reach the fortune in the drain
And now my hands are trapped
Inside a vacuum in the watermain

Magic televisions
Telepathic intermissions

Wake me from my sleep
Tamper with my sanity

My braincells have all burst
My tongue has turned to dust
My eyes have started to spin[?]
I want to get the thirst

Drink it and you'll see
The freedom that possesses me
The kick that comes so easily
With ease you become somebody
I feel like I've been harpooned
I killed myself with junk food
Cannot stop my thirst
Don't drink the water
'Cause you don't know where it's been

Some sugar got me here today[?]
And I know TV has promised me a dream

Corrections and additions as usual please, guys!  Good luck with Honolulu, Tim!

Cheers,

Corporate_Automaton

Right then I've had ago at 'Midget' from the unreleased section of the site.

please bear with me. This one was really hard!!

MIDGET

Gathered up on the grass,
On a bed of broken glass,
We're Artificial green,
We look the science of our scene,
Hope we make the bate for the birds up in the trees,
My hoste prepares drunken toast(not sure about that last word)
and drink my weight in antifreeze,

Get sun stroke, You can somking in the sun (Repeats several times)

Tuesday afternoon,
The tinkers come in twos,
Grandpar's hit the roof, is go'na liberate her youth,
Legs divided lies comatose, and unaware of where he's gone,
She hands him over his over coat, to permanenty undone,

(not sure about some of this verse)

Chourse same as before

Up, up,up,up, up,
We come by appointment,
Its our job check'n up checking up on you,
Bet your not silver serving,
There's an ash try in your hand,
rest your head in full effect, while the misrable woman sleeps,
permanent around this place while the permanent drunkneness embrace,

Gett'n up from the grass,
We're the cappucino class,
we're artificial green,
we make the science of our scene.
The hungry devils taste the bate, and call the birds up in the trees.
As the host prepares a Mollatoff,
I can drink my weight in antifreeze.

Thats it, I think there are wrong words in there in placers. if any one can help that would be great!

Ok. Here's my stab at Honolulu as my ears hear it :-

Where's it going to be?
The voice is asking me
I'm just about to end my shift
We quietly sit, the meter ticks  (x2)

Drive away and take me to Honolulu
When your journey's overdue ???  x2

Backed by indecision ???
The keys in the ignition
The other side of the glass
The taxi driver starts to laugh
Stranded at the station
Without a destination
First into ____________ interview ???
On the radio it's Elvis Presley

Chorus x4

Follow the equator
Says the circumnavigator
You're steetwise
Well advised
But I just want you to take me for a ride

 ??? ??? ??? ??? ???(no idea on this bit!!!)
Call me 5566999

Chorus x2

(musical interlude)

Chorus x8

As usual feel free to fill in the blanks or amend as and where neccessary. All contributions greatfully receieved!

Cheers

Hey Tim

I always heard the lyrics as -

Honolulu

Where's it going to be?
The voice is asking me
I'm just about to end my shift
we quietly sit, the meter ticks

Driver will you take me to Honolulu
The journeys up to you

Backed by indecision
The keys in the ignition
The other side of the glass
The taxi driver starts to laugh
Stranded at the station
Without a destination
The first thing to come into view
On the radio is Elvis Presley

Driver will you take me to Honolulu
The journeys up to you

Follow the equator
says the circumnavigator
the streetwise
Well advised
But I just want you to take me for a ride
So cruel but you?ll tell me about your life
Call me 5566999

Driver will you take me to Honolulu
The journeys up to you

Good work, Tim and Damon!  I think that's Honolulu done.  And a special mention to Greg for working out Midget - that's some impressive work!  I think you've got it licked, the only thing I would add is:

My host prepares a drunken toast,
['Cause I can] drink my weight in Antifreeze.

Other than that addition, I reckon you've got it spot on.

How good are the rare/unreleased tracks?!  I'm especially digging on 'Unknown 2' - it's a wicked song.  Shame it was never released!

Thanks, guys

Hi poeple,
Thanks for the comment on Miget. As I was working out the lyrics I realised that Midget is a very DARK song. I wondered what Matt was thinking about at the time?

Seventy

I?m unaware but I can smell the winter, blanket of snow, cover up I splinter.
Hands to the ground and fill my empty pocket, can?t see a way to see the day.
Maybe we?ll be safer on our own, can you see a way to lose the face you?ve outgrown.
Don?t believe in what you?re told before you get old.

(That was short and easy)

Souvenir

This place is getting smaller every day
and everything has taken it?s own way
Sold you a disguise
Help me see
See yourself in every face we meet
Living in a shipwreck at high tide
Cherry blossom hair wax by your side
Looking at the answer every time I find
Then you'll see that all we have is

This place is getting smaller every day
and everything has taken its own way
Sold you a disguise
Help me sleep
see yourself in every face we meet

It's your figurine souvenir
but you won?t sell anything here
when your namesake?s over exposed
and the doors you?re facing are all closed

This place is getting smaller every day
and everything has taken its own way
Sold you a disguise
help me see
See yourself in every face we meet

Can?t buy acceptation
can?t take rejection
there?s two dimensions
Confuse the question
a frozen error
you won?t remember
like city sleepers
Inhale water

Get your figurine souvenir
but you won?t buy anything here
and your namesake?s over exposed
and the doors you?re facing are all closed

Do The Tube

Evening face
Derelict place
Make me an answer
Plasticine dancer
Open a window
Make me a widow
Call me a freak show
You took a risko

You?re sister disco.

It?s not my fault
You don?t understand
These things never go
As I planned
I?ve only got short straws
In my hand

You?re sister disco

He?s adrift upon the hill

You?re sister disco

He?s adrift upon the hill

Ultra Violet

You must be heard
You try to catch a
Catch a glimpse of
You're dying to catch up
Catch a glimpse of

You're never praised
Now you're erased
And when we're gone
We're dressed in neon

Yeah, I'm quite sure it is. I was thinking this when listening to the song on the way to work today (although Damon has helped fill in a couple of words I used to mumble through there!)

Hi Dan,
I wonder if he's refering to the term 'Disco Bisket' and the line 'you took a riskgo'.

Would be great to hear what the story was behind this song.

Arthur Walker

The ghost in my house, it chases you and me
all night, it brings us misery
hot house with haunted memory
cool cars force Petrol Company

I sold my map and compass and fell in love with numbers
and now we?re annual members, I never thought you?d jump us.

Through Muslim drapes we spy, the apparition glides slowly by
bite my nails, bite the floor. Fell like I?ve been here before
through Muslim drapes we spy, the apparition glides slowly by
bite my nails bite the floor, chewing like a herbivore

I sold my map and compass and fell in love with numbers
and now we?re annual members, I never thought you?d jump us.

I do remember when our time begins again
impatience is waiting for who knows when
my feet running out of time to kill
the blisters that I collect from standing still

I sold my map and compass and fell in love with numbers
and now we?re annual members, I never thought you?d jump us
my name is Arthur Walker, I am a lost explorer
there?s nothing you?ll discover, because I?ve been there for you

Pocket Promise

I?ll invade your company, cut a hole in history
the straightest face, you?ll recognise
you?ll expect a cheap surprise
and think when my heads caved in,
no x-rays and I?ll learn to swim
and think when my heads caved in
no x-rays and I?ll learn to swim

We?re pleased to see the maximum security
You think, looks good but nothing turns out as it should

I?m a master locksmith, there?s nothing I won?t lift
what?s yours is mine, what?s mine is mine
I?ll be thieving all the stuff you?re buying

and think when my heads caved in,
no x-rays and I?ll learn to swim
and think when my heads caved in
no x-rays and I?ll learn to swim

We?re pleased to see the maximum security
You think, looks good but nothing turns out as it should

We?re pleased to see the maximum security
You think, looks good but nothing turns out as it should
I?m mobile, I?m senile, no sympathy in my smile
You want it, you need it, you?re looking for it but you will never find it

Yesterday On The Horizon

When you were waiting for the last taxi home
Check the change from this telephone
As yet, you?ll get, your wearing it
Bank notes, cash floats, hot cannabis

illusionist resist telling this, slight of hand remove at the wrist
super calm, you?ll dodge me alone
useless canvas, I?ll die alone

Yesterday on the horizon, tomorrow you?ll be keeping your eyes open
Yesterday on the horizon, tomorrow you?ll be keeping your eyes open

In an illusionist resist telling this, slight of hand remove at the wrist
super calm, you?ll dodge me alone
useless canvas, I?ll die alone

Yesterday on the horizon, tomorrow you?ll be keeping your eyes open
Yesterday on the horizon, tomorrow you?ll be keeping your eyes open

The million laughs almost, resemble a queen
perfect cut and torn at the seams
smiles rain down from underground
cut and paste from cheap magazines

Yesterday on the horizon, tomorrow you?ll be keeping your eyes open

Ahoy, Damon!

Excellent work there, as always.  I agree with Dan, though, the last line of Arthur Walker I've always heard as

"there's nothing you'll discover/'cause I got there before ya".

Also, I'm pretty sure that the last bit of the first verse is

"hot house with haunted memory/cool cars, our spectral company"

but that's just how I hear it.  There was a Cable page on myspace for a couple of weeks before the 'official' cable myspace page came up and it had a demo version of Arthur Walker on it and the line definitely sounded like "spectral company" but before that I'd always gone with "petrol company".  Hmmm... we need Pete Cable to confirm it either way!

Other than that, your lyric work is top notch!

Thanks, dude

THE CLAIREVOYNAT'

Looking for a work of fiction,
Traped in an office faced a new prediction,
Looking for a work of fiction,
Traped in an office faced a new prediction,

How long can this feel now (repeats)

I can wait to realise my fate,
Day before hours,
Till there here again,
Its a shame, I don't know your name,
It makes me too feel vain, Make you do the same,

Looking for a work of fiction, traped in an office, Guessed a new prediction (repeat)

How long can this feel now (repeat).

Okay, thought it only right to try my hand at a song. So I went for (i thought) an easy one, but I'm really not sure about the chorus, so any input welcomed!

Widower

You?ll imprison all the wisdom you learn
In your palaces under the sun
And when you promise yourself to everyone
Make your excuses when you turn back and run

I?ll be first in your wake if you?re dusting down picture frames
Cos I?ll be first in your wake if you shake the leaves from the graves

So bitter was world now you?re unfurled
You?ll be rid of us wearing your black pearls
I?ll be your scapegoat, wearing your black coat
Waiting alone, reading sleeve notes

I lack the nerve so I idly observe
We?ve got the impetus pulling us backwards
I lack the nerve so I idly observe
We?ve got the impetus you can?t stop us

I?ll be first in your wake if you?re dusting down picture frames
Cos I?ll be first in your wake if you shake the leaves from the graves

You?ll imprison all the wisdom you learn
In your palaces under the sun
And when you promise yourself to everyone
Make your excuses when you turn back and run

I?ll be first in your wake if you?re dusting down picture frames
Cos I?ll be first in your wake if you shake the leaves from the graves

Can't Find My Way Home (Not a Cable original I know but thought I'd give it a go)

Come down off your throne and leave your body alone
Somebody must change
You are the reason I've been waiting so long
Somebody holds the key

But I'm near the end and I just ain't got the time
And I'm wasted and I can't find my way home

Come down on your own and leave your body alone
Somebody must change
You are the reason I've been waiting all these years
Somebody holds the key

But I'm near the end and I just ain't got the time
And I'm wasted and I can't find my way home

But I can't find my way home
But I can't find my way home
But I can't find my way home
But I can't find my way home
Well I can't find my way home
And I ain't done nothing wrong
But I can't find my way home

It should be Muslin not Muslim drapes in Arthur Walker should it not?!

Aanyway, here's the lyrics to my fave Cable song, Vertigo, with a botched version of the one line i've NEVER been able to work out!! :

I lock the frontdoor from the inside
Through the key from the top of my vertical incline
??Impacts with no bounce at all coz you can't grow balance??
With your pocket so small

I lock the fontdoor from the inside
Through the key from the top of a vertical incline
Average and under siege from the ultra mega superleague

This electo magne-tricity it's got a stranglehold on me
I'm an only lasting memory caused by inactivity

Snip-snap I keep coming back
Nowhere to sail while we're chasing our own tales
Laid back you're tied to the rails
A silky demise when your parachute fails

This electo magne-tricity it's got a stranglehold on me
I'm an only lasting memory caused by inactivity

This electo magne-tricity it's got a stranglehold on me
I'm an only lasting memory caused by inactivity

Snip-snap I keep coming back
Nowhere to sail while we're chasing our own tales
Laid back you're tied to the rails
A silky demise when your parachute fails

I lock the frontdoor from the inside
Through the key from the top of my vertical incline
??Impacts with no bounce at all coz you can't grow balance??
With your pocket so small

I lock the fontdoor from the inside
Through the key from the top of a vertical incline
Average and under siege from the ultra mega superleague

This electo magne-tricity it's got a stranglehold on me
I'm an only lasting memory caused by inactivity

This electo magne-tricity it's got a stranglehold on me
I'm an only lasting memory caused by inactivity

 ;D ;D

If you're still on this thread Pete, i'd love to know why this tune didn't make Sublingual??
Title: Re: Cable lyrics
Post by: Greg on August 26, 2006, 08:50:38 pm
Alright Gojonnygogogo,
I think the reason Vertigo didn't make Sublingual is because I don't think it was concesent with the rest of the album sound and feel. Also the sturcture is very simular to Blue Birds Are Blue. Don't get me wrong I think Vertigo is an ace song. I like the bit when it drops out to vocals and guitar and drops back in classic Cable!

I'm sure Pete well know the reason but that would seem the most simple answer.

Nice Cable Collection, I've been looking for years for some of that vinyle. I'm gald to see I'm not the only one with the 7" and CD singles.

Greg.

Cheers buddy. It's heinously geeky but Cable's about the only band i'm proud to be a record collecting completist for!  :D

Yeah me to. In Derby there were two verions of Down Lift the Uptroden up for sale at way ahead records years ago. I remember everyone I know who were into Cable buying the other one.

Would be good to hear from Pete how and why Cable chose there B-sides, There all so good. They also played them live as well.

It should be tails not tales in Vertigo should it not?!

Vertigo is one of my favourite Cable songs, again I can only post the words as I?ve always heard them but I think that you did an amazing job as Matt really was unintelligible at times and especially so on Vertigo

I lock the front door from the inside
Threw the key from the top of my vertical incline
Impacts with no bounce at all because you got more banks
With your pocket so small

I lock the front door from the inside

I'm an only lasting memory caused by inactivity

Snip-snap I keep coming back
Nowhere to sail while we're chasing our own tails
Laid back you're tied to the rails

This electro magnet electricity it's got a stranglehold on me
I'm an only lasting memory caused by inactivity

Hi, Steve_elite (or should that be 1337?!) and nicof - welcome to the site!  I think I agree with you there, Steve_elite, "with nerve ends" sounds pretty much like what I hear.

How come no-one has had a go at Oubliette yet?  If anybody fancies having a go I'd be much obliged - I haven't got a clue what any of Oubliette's lyrics are (apart from the "salt water reptile" bit that Pete Cable said was his favourite lyric)!

Thanks,

Ahoy!

Land Speed Record

Do the rumba do the clap[?]
When you pause the second hand
Indisposable I am
To the festival I ran
Now I'm trying to escape
From the yellow boundary tape
Wearing tyre marks on my shirt
[No idea] like a permafrost certificate
I am just a mess
A vagabond's address
Tailor Made [something...] your lesuire
Measure your success
Blood on the dashboard
Action Manicure
For the holder of
The land Speed Record

The world comes watching me[?] (Refrain 2nd time around: I watch the moon shake)
Watching the moon shake
Broken every rule
To cover one mistake

Lie like a prisoner
When the cinema
Falls silently to sleep
I can see us as we spin
'Round the hairpins of Monaco

Lie like a prisoner
When the cinema
Falls silently...
Smile through the ornamental pain
That you wear

Actually, there weren't too many gaps there (and hopefully not too many mistakes)!  Corrections and additions gratefully received!

Should have looked at this page earlier, but......

Song 1: I always thought it was "Cos your my only friend in noman's-land's-end" i.e. combining noman's land (trenches) and land's end.  :-\

Land Speed Record: "I can burn my press certificate" :-\

Do the Tube: I thought was "make me a wierdo" instead of 'widow' :-\

Pocket Promise I'll be a company, burn a hole in history, strangest face..... :-\

Arthur Walker: This one I'm 99.9999% certain! COOL CARS, FAST PETROL COMPANIES  :D

Niceone too. Really enjoyed reading the Souvenir lyrics. intreasting song. Dude you've got ears like a bat!!

Do you thing 'Do the tube has something to do with takeing drugs/ Pills.

What dose everyone else think?

Greg.

Yeah, I'm quite sure it is. I was thinking this when listening to the song on the way to work today (although Damon has helped fill in a couple of words I used to mumble through there!)

Look at the inlay of When Animals Attack, the picture for Do The Tube is an x-ray type image of someone with an ashtray for a lung, so my guess is its about smoking fags ('I've only got short straws in my hand').

oubliette, one of my favourite ones too.i'm usually good with hearing lyrics but not good with this one.i'l have to find a few hours to listen to it .

Is the end something like:

If/as your skin begins to turn green
And your feet are half asleep

Call me bitter, call me a creep
I'm ashamed to hear you speak

Sale of the Century always been an odd one, no idea about the first verse but think the second is something like:

Paid a man
Who's never short of things to say
Squandered hours watching paint dry everyday
Paper thin
Got an ear of shedding skin
Saw you leave, didn't see you coming in

I think that is almost there, I hear it as 'Call me bitter, call me me weak'

The start maybe goes something like

I'm a god, I'm god, all the simple things are yours
I'm a god, I'm a god
Concrete in your veins x loads
You've got concrete in your veins
No idea on the chorus bit
Who where and when
Don't believe your friends
No idea

Vertigo line:

In banks, with no plans at all, cos you can't rob banks with your pockets so small.

Yes? No?

This is what I've always heard!

Does anyone have a clue what the Hydra lyrics are? I'm working on it but I'm really terrible at hearing lyrics properly.

Really loving this thread - listening to Sub-Lingual in the car at work and I keep saying to myself "OH! *That's* what it is!"

Hydra ... no idea at all, Matt was too good at writing/singing impenetrable lyrics. Hydra and new set of bruises are two of my favourite Cable songs and to this day (after endless plays) i have no idea what he's actually saying. Also, rather weirdly i can play Hydra on guitar but have never been able to work NSOB out. Don't know if its some weird tuning or my own poor musicianship but i simply cannot fathom whats happening guitar wise in that song

Moonless Night In The Small Town

It?s easier to see through watery debris, the insecurity comes easier to me. Frozen vegetable, an oblong distance call; eternally preserved. Impossible to see.

I cannot replace; your 7 legged sack race. No one wants their futures pressed against a clock face. I love January, hate this century. The future isn?t free, its promises are empty.

I need to raise my winter holidays, your deliberate; accidental ways.

pocket promise is 100% "burn a hole in history".
