That's pretty much complete as far as i'm aware. The only things I could add would be the last Derby show at the Vic Inn and Freeze and Pocket Promise instore acoustic but, even then, those were bootlegged onto a minidisc.

The live promos of which you speak are from: 29.8.97

I have some more early demos, on top of those 3 listed there...

01 Tangle

03 Underwater
04 Temporary Shelter
05 Afterthought
06 Choice

I don't know if these are correct names, but if they're any use to anyone, let me know.

oh, and I also have the last recorded demos, but I've always wondered about this... the numbering of the tracks I have are missing a few, look

02 Rick Wakeman.mp3
03 One for the ladies (stallion).mp3
04 Midget.mp3
06 Tarzan.mp3
07 Instrumental untld.mp3

Does that mean there was a track 1 and 5? Maybe more after 7?

I think that was me that put those on tinternet a while ago, did you get them off a single page?

The first track was Vertigo, five had the end cut off it, and it was already on the album, was it "Last something on the horizon".... can' remamber the song title....

My friend Nav got them off Darius a few years ago....

I didn't download them, I either got sent them on a CD, or had a cassette tape with them numbered like that (I can't remember, was so long ago). Either way I got the from a mate of Pete's in Derby.

I heard that Gorilla were once on free cereal CD, didn't know about Cable though...then again i'm not a fan of either cereal so how would I of known? I prefer coco pops..

Post by: PlacidCasual on September 19, 2006, 10:04:58 pm
Im sad. I have both, the other one has 'A' on it.  I used both  cd's   to balance a shelve for a while. You see them all the time in bargain bins in second hand cd shops. The other tracks on them are crap. Maybe space raiders i need the disko docor being the exception. Anyway they were not bad for a cereal freebie. It was Golden Grahams coz i used to love them and was quite surprised when i saw a cd with cable on it attached to the box.

Post by: Damon on September 19, 2006, 11:16:18 pm
I?d never heard about Cable and A being on CD?s that were given away in cereal boxes, I never eat breakfast and kind of wish I had now. Surely Freeze The Atlantic would have been a slightly more appropriate breakfast song ?. that or Murdering Spree!

well look what I've found... more "Last Ever Recordings"!

I found these on a back up of an old hard drive (I never throw anything away)

01 1870.m4a
02 Tribal.m4a
03 Cape Fear.m4a
04 Tarzan.m4a
05 Vertigo (from Arthur Walker Vinyl).m4a

1870 is like an unplugged version of Seventy, very down-tempo
Tribal = Tarzan off the other "Last Ever Recordings"
Cape Fear = Rick Wakeman, but sounds a little different
Tarzan is very slow, but NOT the same as Tribal/other Tarzan
Vertigo, no idea why this is on the list, my mate might have just banged it on since it's the vinyl version.

The mix quality suggets that these have been done properly in a studio to a degree, better than the other set of Final Recordings, so I guess I'll call this lot, "The Final, Final Recordings"!

m4a can be played in iTunes, its just audio compressed with AAC, slightly better than MP3 at the same bit-rates.

I'll try and up the tracks somewhere

This is insane... you talk about titles that are little more than a vague memory to me...
I don't remember us calling anything 'Tarzan'... but I suppose we must have. I think the stuff you're all referring to as 'the final recordings' are b-sides we intended to use that we did at Andy Sneap's place. He recorded Dinky and the other b-sides from that period. We also did a recording with him that was totally live and was meant for use in radio interviews as 'exclusive session tracks' - the idea was that we would tour regional radio stations, the local indie show person would interview us and then claim we were going to play live for them in the studio (all very underhand, this showbiz lark) and they'd actually play the tape. This session is where the 'From Here' version of Oubliette comes from.

What I really can't believe is that you have material like 'Afterthought'  - how do you lot find this stuff? Songs that never left the practise room! (The 'placeholder' lyrics are 'piece of wood, piece of wood, piece of wood, piece of wood, sellotape')

I'd forgotten that Oubliette was once called 'Alice' and I'm glad it looks like no-one has a copy of 'mouse with wings man'. ;)

I would really love a copy of the Oxford point show with Old Peely on - would someone be happy to do me one? I have to have the intro bit, where he says 'with their hearts on their sleeves and their eyes on the stars, it's cable!'
I miss him dearly... :'(
Title: Re: Cable Rarities
Post by: FireSka on May 24, 2007, 02:05:14 am
hmm , what is "Afterthought"?

Tarzan goes something like "It's easier to see, ? more to me than great.  Insecurity is easier to me.  A frozen vegetable. ? long distance call.  Eternally preserved.  Impossible to see.  I cannot replace a seven legged sack race.  No one wants their future pressed against a clock face.  I love Januaray", etc...

Is that one not called Tarzan?

Would you have any idea what the untitled instrumental is called Pete?  It's 5:20 and resembles Brothers And Sisters a little.  Maybe I should post some samples...
Title: Re: Cable Rarities
Post by: Pete Cable on May 24, 2007, 10:22:40 am
It would be good if you could post some samples. It might help jog the old grey cells... some of those words vaguely mean something to me - though i'm baffled by the title - usually songs had working titles that referred to the way they sounded, e.g. tribal probably had some floor tom based drum pattern. Sometimes songs that you know now were actually 2 seperate songs that we suddenly discovered went together well and we made one decent one out of 2 not so brilliant ideas. Afterthought was like a throwaway intro piece, about 2 min long - I don't think even Cooper got to play it - it had a great riff but never developed past being a bit of throw away warm up material. It was way cool though and I've often thought of nicking that and extra limbs while no-ones looking... ;D

Hi Jake,

You might want to save the bother digitising them as i think all of these have now been uploaded to youtube already.  Although saying that, having reread your post,   professionally recorded versions would make for much better quality than those already uploaded!

Freeze the Atlantic and bluebirds are both just edited versions from the when animals attack movie as i have both of these promo videos too.

Now does anyone have the honolulu that Pete mention a long time ago?  That i'd love to see!

Thanks for the video post, i notice they are in MP4 though which i'm guessing will lead to people having no sound whilst trying to watch them. If this is the case can someone with more time and knowledge than me post a link to the appropriate codec or nearest solution please?

Thanking you in advance

Damon!

Let us know what format you'd prefer and I'll re-compress the MPEG streams, keep it at top quality.

Damon, you never got back to me with a different codec, so I guess they're ok?

Anyone have problems with the video format?

Really enjoyed the Derby gig the other week and the Unreleased Demos and Rarities CD was a great surprise.

However the one track i'm really after is the original b-side of Vertigo. Does anyone have an MP3 of this even though it was only on the Arthur Walker vinyl? I've got the CD single but am missing this version.

I can get it off YouTube but it's not the best quality you see.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Weird! The 7" vinyl version I have of this has a slightly different intro and ending.
Is the version here really taken from the Arthur Walker Vinyl?
I don't hear any obvious signs of vinyl crackles at all on this.
You can hear the version I have on YouTube,
i'd be interested to hear from anybody why these differences appear to be...

When you're finished transferring that will you have any plans to share it on a torrent site maybe?
Would love to see that appear on DIME...
What's the sound like?

I'll put it up as soon as I've cleaned it up a little. Needs a little more low end and balance, which I'm hoping to get done this next week when I visit my mate's studio.

Presenting, an (afaik) unreleased recording of Cable playing The Big City Bash in 1996!

This tape, handed to me by Steven Battelle (ex LostAlone and Derby resident), was recorded by his mum from the radio broadcast of the gig (whilst he was front row at the gig). The tape's nearly 20 years old, and recorded from radio. Do not expect a soundboard quality recording!

You can download the audio in Apple Lossless or FLAC format, whichever you prefer—

Apple Lossless

FLAC
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/40145/Big%20City%20Bash%20Derby%20%2796.flac

I've been meaning to put this up for years, sorry for the delay. I hope someone finds it interesting!
Big thanks to Steven Battelle for personally entrusting me with this tape!

cheers

Amazing thanks for sharing, can't wait to listen. This gig was actually the first time I saw cable live. For those not from Derby The big bash was an annual full weekend of music in the town centre. If I remember correctly the Saturday was all pop music and let loose were the headliners that day. Thankfully Sunday was better local music day. Gorilla, beekeepers played and cable headlined. The mosh pit for cable was mental

Hey! Jake,

Just visiting some old haunts (as it were) and was really happy to see that you had got around to posting this gig you mentioned you had. Thanks a lot for posting it, listening to it now, sounds good.. Would I be correct in assuming the last four digits in the download links (2796) is the actual date (02.07.1996) ?

Thanks again,

Richie

Hi Richie,

The numbers are the hex code for an apostrophe, the filename is Big City Bash Derby '96 but the ' is being converted. Not sure of the original date, unfortunately.

cheers!
