Ahoy!

That's a great idea, Damon! To get this thread back on track then, I'll have an attempt at the lyrics to Land Speed Record myself and people can fill in the gaps.  Thanks by the way to everyone who filled in the gaps in my attempt at Bluebirds are Blue - much appreciated!

Land Speed Record

Do the rumba do the clap[?]
When you pause the second hand
Indisposable I am
To the festival I ran
Now I'm trying to escape
From the yellow boundary tape
Wearing tyre marks on my shirt
[No idea]
I am just a mess
A vagabond's address
Tailor Made [something...]
Measure your success
Blood on the dashboard
Action Manicure
For the holder of
The land Speed Record

The world comes watching me[?] (Refrain 2nd time around: I watch the moon shake)
Watching the moon shake
Broken every rule
To cover one mistake

Lie like a prisoner
When the cinema
Falls silently to sleep
I can see us as we spin
'Round the hairpins of Monaco

Lie like a prisoner
When the cinema
Falls silently...
Smile through the ornamental pain
That you wear

Actually, there weren't too many gaps there (and hopefully not too many mistakes)!  Corrections and additions gratefully received!

Cheers,

Corporate_Automaton

P.S. Greg, I've only just noticed that this is another 6/4 (but the middle 8 is 4/4)!

Alright Corporate,
6/4 is a great time signature as you can make it feel really eaven like 4/4. Which is how Cable use it also dosen't change the over all flow like some other time signatures do. Whisper firing Lines in 6/4 to and sounds like its in 4 (there loads of Cable songs that do this see if you can spot them). That's great songwriting and musicianships skill for you.

I'll see if I can help with 'Land speed Record' but it looks like you've a great job as it is!

I think The line in the first verse is 'A PERMIT PRESSED CERTIFICAT'

 Tailor made 'YA-LEISURE'

Then the line in the choures is 'THE WORLD COMES WHATCHING YOU MAKE'

I think thats it. ::)

The Colder Climate

Tear down your home
when the air you breathe has gone
Turn from the sky
I?ll buy your land
But I haven?t got the money

On shallow ground
you?re a disciple to the sand
will the public get what they deserve

Turn from the sky
He sold his heart
for a second hand opinion

Will the public get what they deserve?
Will the public get what they deserve?

Dinky

There?s a landslide coming down the mountain
Tsunami choking on the sea
Blind spot over 3-60 degrees
Ricochet driver times speed

There?s a landslide coming down the mountain
Tsunami choking on the sea
Blind spot over 3-60 degrees
And a target over me

Don?t ask me how but your killing me now

Headlights over in the mirror
Lies flash by our eyes
lying with my mouth wide open
trying not to act surprised

Headlights over in the mirror
Lights flash by our eyes
driving with my mouth wide open
trying not to breathe while our ribs are broken

Don?t ask me how but your killing me now
Killing me now.

From Here You Can See Yourself

Heads you want a remedy
Tails you want a remedy

No, I?ve never met the queen
she?s never anywhere I?ve been
She walks veiled in solar beams
Heads you want a remedy
Tails you want a remedy

Heads you want a remedy
Tails you want a remedy

Now, feeling happier
and so much nicer to everyone
now feeling happier
Heads you want a remedy
Tails you want a remedy

Heads you want a remedy
Tails you want a remedy

Ahoy!

Damon's been busy! Thanks, man!  Do you never sleep?!

Greg, I see what you mean about 6/4 feeling like 4/4.  I think that's why I've never noticed that so many of Cable's songs are in 6/4 because it just feels so much like 4/4.  It's only when you make a conscious effort to count along that you notice that it isn't 4/4!  Also, thanks for your additions to my attempt at Land Speed Record, much obliged!

Right, because I'm enjoying this so much, I thought I'd have a stab at another song!  This time, it's Song 1.  As usual, if people can fill in my gaps and correct any mistakes then that would be great!

Song 1

On the Verandah looking out to sea
We're weary as KP [that can't be right!]
And I know you're ready
To be dead and buried

Give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains maybe
Fingers crossed, here's my penny [?]

On the Verandah looking out to sea
In weakness you may be find in me
And I know you're ready
For any old somebody

Give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains maybe
Fingers crossed, here's my penny

On the Verandah looking out to sea
We chew off the rears of longevity [?]
Until our balls lay empty
One morning, the light's on me [?]

On the Verandah looking out to sea
I dream that you're with me
'Cos you're my only friend
[something?] Land's End

Give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains maybe
Fingers crossed, here's my penny

You're the captain of the cleaner [?]
On your yacht in the marina
And the lines you rowed between
Are the chalk marks at your murder scene

Thanks,

Alright there Corporat,
I think you've got this one licked!

'we're weary as KP' is right as well as the last verse

'We chew off there rears of longevity' that right

Apart from the last ine in the second verse thats it!

Greg.

Ahoy, Greg!

Cheers for checking the lyrics over, dude.

Just one question: do you have any idea what being 'as weary as KP' means?  What is 'KP'?  A person?  An animal?  KP peanuts?!  Hmmm...  A conundrum!

Thought I?d try and fill in the gaps, this is how I?ve always heard the song

Song One

On the veranda looking out to sea,
Weary escapee,
And I know you?re ready to be dead and buried.

You give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains maybe
Fingers crossed, here?s my penny

On The veranda looking out to sea,
The weakness you may find in me
I know you?re ready
For any old somebody

You give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains maybe
Fingers crossed, here?s my penny

On the veranda looking out to sea
And you are the reason for longevity
Until our balls lay empty
One morning, the light is on me

On the veranda looking out to sea
And I dream that you?re with me
As you?re my only friend
With no mans, lands end

You give me the reason I maybe
When we win the lottery
And whatever your pains may be
Fingers crossed, here?s my penny

You?re the captain, I?m the cleaner
On your yacht in the marina
And the lies you wrote between
Are the chalk marks at your murder scene

Hello

Bit like Blankety Blank round here!

Am currently listening to WAA and finally, after much guess work and misinterpretation(!) over the last 9 years, I'm able to figure out what Matt was blathering on about. Now I know what Richie was shouting during God Gave Me Gravity (always tried to lip read what he was singing at gigs but could never work it out).

I'll give Honolulu a try and let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Tim

Hold on there a goddam second!

Ahoy!

I think I agree with Damon here, Greg.  It seems likely that the line is "a weary escapee" and not "weary as KP" because escapee actually makes sense!  I guess we'll have to wait for Pete Cable to come and confirm it either way!

LOL at Blankety Blank!  I agree!  It is a hell of a lot of fun working the lyrics out though.  That's why I'm gonna have a go at:

The (We Did the Music for the Sprite Ad) blues

Sit around all day
In an alcoholic daze
Counting all my money
The profits I have made
Money makes me dizzy'
'Cause it turns the world too fast
Flush it down the toilet
It's blocking up the u-bend
My secret must be kept
'Cause I'll be robbed if they find out
There must be 90 thousand pounds
In my aquatic bank account
I've tried and tried again
To reach the fortune in the drain
And now my hands are trapped
Inside a vacuum in the watermain

Magic televisions
Telepathic intermissions

Wake me from my sleep
Tamper with my sanity

My braincells have all burst
My tongue has turned to dust
My eyes have started to spin[?]
I want to get the thirst

Drink it and you'll see
The freedom that possesses me
The kick that comes so easily
With ease you become somebody
I feel like I've been harpooned
I killed myself with junk food
Cannot stop my thirst
Don't drink the water
'Cause you don't know where it's been

Some sugar got me here today[?]
And I know TV has promised me a dream

Corrections and additions as usual please, guys!  Good luck with Honolulu, Tim!

Cheers,

Right then I've had ago at 'Midget' from the unreleased section of the site.

please bear with me. This one was really hard!!

MIDGET

Gathered up on the grass,
On a bed of broken glass,
We're Artificial green,
We look the science of our scene,
Hope we make the bate for the birds up in the trees,
My hoste prepares drunken toast(not sure about that last word)
and drink my weight in antifreeze,

Get sun stroke, You can somking in the sun (Repeats several times)

Tuesday afternoon,
The tinkers come in twos,
Grandpar's hit the roof, is go'na liberate her youth,
Legs divided lies comatose, and unaware of where he's gone,
She hands him over his over coat, to permanenty undone,

(not sure about some of this verse)

Chourse same as before

Up, up,up,up, up,
We come by appointment,
Its our job check'n up checking up on you,
Bet your not silver serving,
There's an ash try in your hand,
rest your head in full effect, while the misrable woman sleeps,
permanent around this place while the permanent drunkneness embrace,

Gett'n up from the grass,
We're the cappucino class,
we're artificial green,
we make the science of our scene.
The hungry devils taste the bate, and call the birds up in the trees.
As the host prepares a Mollatoff,
I can drink my weight in antifreeze.

Thats it, I think there are wrong words in there in placers. if any one can help that would be great!

Greg.

Ok. Here's my stab at Honolulu as my ears hear it :-

Where's it going to be?
The voice is asking me
I'm just about to end my shift
We quietly sit, the meter ticks  (x2)

Drive away and take me to Honolulu
When your journey's overdue ???  x2

Backed by indecision ???
The keys in the ignition
The other side of the glass
The taxi driver starts to laugh
Stranded at the station
Without a destination
First into ____________ interview ???
On the radio it's Elvis Presley

Chorus x4

Follow the equator
Says the circumnavigator
You're steetwise
Well advised
But I just want you to take me for a ride

 ??? ??? ??? ??? ???(no idea on this bit!!!)
Call me 5566999

Chorus x2

(musical interlude)

Chorus x8

As usual feel free to fill in the blanks or amend as and where neccessary. All contributions greatfully receieved!

Cheers

Tim

Hey Tim

I always heard the lyrics as -

Honolulu

Where's it going to be?
The voice is asking me
I'm just about to end my shift
we quietly sit, the meter ticks

Driver will you take me to Honolulu
The journeys up to you

Backed by indecision
The keys in the ignition
The other side of the glass
The taxi driver starts to laugh
Stranded at the station
Without a destination
The first thing to come into view
On the radio is Elvis Presley

Driver will you take me to Honolulu
The journeys up to you

Follow the equator
says the circumnavigator
the streetwise
Well advised
But I just want you to take me for a ride
So cruel but you?ll tell me about your life
Call me 5566999

Driver will you take me to Honolulu
The journeys up to you

Ahoy!

Good work, Tim and Damon!  I think that's Honolulu done.  And a special mention to Greg for working out Midget - that's some impressive work!  I think you've got it licked, the only thing I would add is:

My host prepares a drunken toast,
['Cause I can] drink my weight in Antifreeze.

Other than that addition, I reckon you've got it spot on.

How good are the rare/unreleased tracks?!  I'm especially digging on 'Unknown 2' - it's a wicked song.  Shame it was never released!

Thanks, guys
